Alan Stevenson - Publisher

Alan StevensonOnce again a very warm welcome to the seventeenth edition of STEVENSONS – Scotland’s Good Hotel & Food Book.

Another bad winter and the current economic climate has had an adverse affect on the tourist industry and the decline in visitor numbers was to be expected - especially from abroad. There was a very slow start to the season (doom and gloom scenario with some!) but a marked improvement as the year progressed. Although trading has been difficult, country house hotels and rural restaurants have managed to hold their own. Urban establishments have not faired so well.

Despite the weather at times, I have again enjoyed my annual pilgrimage around the country and met up with some 'well kent faces' as we say in Scotland. Some new faces as well, although the market is fairly static right now. Very few properties bought or sold as we continue along this precarious economic road. As usual my personal selection includes some outstanding country house hotels and restaurants.

Grateful to my sponsors, House of Bruar, Scotch Beef Club and Brodies Tea and Coffee. Also to James Chassels, my consultant, for all his help and advice. James was formally an AA Food Inspector (31 years service now retired). My newsletter will keep you up to date with latest developments within the industry. Already plans are in place for the 18th edition of the book for the year 2013. Enjoy your travels in Scotland - always a warm welcome assured.
