I was delighted to be asked by Alan to write the foreword for his 2018 edition of Scotland’s Good Hotel and Food Book. Now in its 23rd year the book is testament to Alan’s passion and dedication in promoting the best of Scottish hospitality and food.

We have an excellent natural larder in Scotland and some extremely talented chefs producing wonderful fayre which, when combined with the great hospitality offered by the establishments in this guide, prove a winning combination.

However, as the choices afforded to people continue to increase and standards rise worldwide, we need to constantly evolve our properties. I believe the hospitality industry in Scotland has risen to the challenge and continues to improve and adapt to meet guests’ expectations. Every property in this book has been personally selected by Alan and all have hospitality and service at their heart. Alan’s concise and straightforward entries give the reader the information required to allow them to make an informed decision on where to stay and where to eat.

Everyone involved within the hospitality industry in Scotland owes Alan a debt of gratitude for providing our guests and potential guests with the handbook to quality establishments in Scotland.
